What a sign means
Does a swarmer in the yard mean the house has termites?
Not by itself. Swarmers outdoors near a stump or timber are common. Swarmers indoors, near windows or on floors, usually point to a colony close by.
What do mud tubes on a foundation mean?
Subterranean termites build them to move between soil and wood. Break one open and see whether the termites return to repair it, then call.
Why pests here behave as they do
Why do stink bugs turn up indoors in October?
The brown marmorated stink bug and the lady beetle look for winter shelter, and they get in through gaps around windows, siding and vents. Sealing those gaps is the main step.
Do mosquitoes come from the lake or from the yard?
Mostly from the yard. The Asian tiger mosquito breeds in small containers such as gutters, tyres and bird baths, so emptying those each week is the first step.
Treatment and paperwork
How do I check a pest control company's licence?
In North Carolina, structural pest control is licensed through the NCDA&CS Structural Pest Control and Pesticides Division. Ask the technician for the licence number and check it on the division's public credential search.
What is a WDIR report?
A wood-destroying insect report is a written statement on the presence or absence of wood-destroying insects, usually needed when a home is sold. It is not a warranty or a structural report, and it must be issued by a licensee after an inspection.
Insurance
Does a homeowners policy cover termite damage?
Often not. Termite and vermin damage is commonly excluded, so read the policy and ask the insurer directly before assuming a claim will be paid.
